Inquiry with Dr. Hong-seok Kim of VOS Dermatology: The Specialist in Juvelook Nodule Solutions

The Fruit of Extensive Experience and Dedication

Many people express concerns regarding Juvelook nodules. Whether they are considering the procedure or currently experiencing side effects, it is a source of significant anxiety. Dr. Hong-seok Kim, a first-generation Juvelook pioneer at VOS Dermatology, offers a clear reassurance: “There is always a definitive solution for any type of nodule.” His confident voice, rooted in years of clinical practice, turns worry into peace of mind. We invite you to explore the reliable Juvelook nodule solutions born from the vast experience of Dr. Hong-seok Kim, a leading authority in the field.

Juvelook Pioneer, VOS Dermatology

I understand that you are part of the first generation to introduce Juvelook to Korea.

Seven to eight years ago, laser treatments were the mainstream of the industry. Skin boosters like Juvelook were a completely new concept back then. I proactively adopted Juvelook with the expectation that it would synergize with lasers by addressing the skin concerns that lasers alone couldn’t resolve. There was also a strong market demand for innovative injectables that went beyond established treatments like Rejuran or hydro-injections.

As a first-generation practitioner, one of the unavoidable challenges must have been the concern over potential side effects, especially given the lack of clinical precedents.

“While Juvelook shares similarities with Sculptra, their structures are fundamentally different. In the early days of Sculptra, procedures were often performed without standardized injection techniques, which led to significant issues with nodules. Although clinical guidelines eventually emerged, many dermatologists remained hesitant to adopt Juvelook, still affected by the ‘trauma’ from those early Sculptra cases.

Rather than being overwhelmed by the fear of side effects, I chose to take a conservative approach to closely observe the skin’s response. I was confident it would deliver excellent results, so I began by applying it to scar treatments. Seeing such positive reactions and successful outcomes only deepened my conviction in the treatment.”

Juvelook Nodules and Side Effects

Juvelook Nodules and Side Effects. Alongside the growing interest in Juvelook, there are constant concerns regarding nodule side effects. Are these issues common enough to warrant reconsidering the procedure altogether?

That is, as long as we move away from the obsession that ‘stronger is better’ or that results must be immediate. In fact, most cases that visit our clinic for Juvelook nodule issues stem from these exact reasons. Problems also arise when the treatment is administered without a proper understanding of Juvelook’s unique characteristics. If you receive treatment from a physician who possesses a thorough and accurate understanding of the product’s nature and properties, you do not need to be overly concerned about side effects.

In fact, many of the cases referred to our clinic for Juvelook nodule issues stemmed from a common pressure to achieve immediate results.

If a nodule does occur, what does the follow-up treatment look like?

The key characteristic of Juvelook’s composition is its vulnerability to heat and water. Since the particles are porous, hollow spheres, the primary objective is to break down the hardened nodules and dissolve the clustered masses. Factors such as the injection method, temperature, and volume of the solution all play a critical role in nodule treatment. It is also essential to consistently apply heat and administer specific dissolving agents to observe the skin’s reaction. The variations in these factors—the intensity and the specific techniques used—constitute the unique ‘know-how’ of each clinic in resolving Juvelook nodules

Are there any common misconceptions or mistakes patients make when dealing with Juvelook nodule treatment?

It truly saddens me to see them so anxious and stressed. However, the raw material of Juvelook is lactic acid (PLA), a substance that naturally biodegrades over time. Therefore, it will never remain as a permanent lump in your body. You don’t need to worry too much.

That said, if left untreated, it can last up to two years, so a proper dissolution process is necessary rather than just waiting. If treated effectively, it can improve within 3 to 4 months; in rare cases, it may take up to 6 months, though that is uncommon. I recommend coming to the clinic once or twice a week for consistent treatment.

We’ve heard that many patients visit VOS Dermatology to treat Juvelook nodules caused at other clinics. What do you believe is the decisive reason they choose VOS Dermatology?

My deep understanding of the procedure and extensive clinical experience have built a strong sense of trust with my patients. Over time, I’ve developed a firm philosophy on how to administer Juvelook and created a clear set of guidelines to provide precise treatment directions. Ultimately, there is no substitute for experience.

I have my own established guidelines. Ultimately, there is no substitute for experience.

Performing a procedure well is certainly important. However, a truly critical factor is how you handle and resolve issues when they arise. I believe my patients trust my extensive clinical experience and the confidence I have in my ability to resolve any complications that may occur.

VOS Dermatology’s Expertise in Resolving Juvelook Nodule Side Effects

Could you share a particularly memorable case among your experiences treating Juvelook nodules?.

There was a patient whose results were excellent on the day of the procedure, but shortly after, they contracted a severe case of COVID-19, causing the treated area to swell significantly. This is actually a reaction more commonly seen with fillers, so it was quite unusual. That case made me realize that my procedural methods might react differently under certain circumstances.

It drove me to think even more intensely about what needed to be changed in the conventional Juvelook injection methods. It became the catalyst for me to refine everything, even down to the types of needles I use. As a result, my current techniques have evolved significantly from my early days. While I’ve always been confident in my procedures, this experience was a turning point that led me to study and research even more deeply.

Does the practitioner’s skill level affect the incidence of nodules?

I believe it certainly does. In Juvelook procedures, the key is the technique of spreading the substance evenly across the skin. The ability to distribute it uniformly and consistently across the same layer of the entire face is what defines a practitioner’s skill—and it’s actually much more difficult than it sounds.

Beyond that, hydration, dilution ratios, the specific injection method, and how it’s combined with other treatments like RF (Radiofrequency) all play critical roles. It is only when all these elements are perfectly balanced that one can truly be free from the risk of Juvelook nodules.

Of course, extensive experience doesn’t automatically mean better technique. However, as you handle a wider variety of cases and observe the results, you are constantly driven to rethink your methods and improve upon them. In that sense, I believe a highly experienced physician is much more likely to deliver superior results.

If you had to pick just one secret behind VOS Dermatology’s Juvelook expertise, what would it be?

First, you should think twice about clinics that administer Juvelook as if it were a filler. Using Juvelook as a primary solution for deep nasolabial folds or under-eye hollowness should be avoided. These areas are anatomically deep, and problems arise when a large volume of Juvelook is injected into those deep layers all at once.

You should reconsider clinics that administer Juvelook as if it were a filler.

Of course, such a technique doesn’t always result in side effects, but it is often the direct cause of nodule issues. I believe we should use skin boosters to stimulate collagen and strengthen the skin itself, while utilizing separate, dedicated procedures to address areas that need more volume.

The process of setting a treatment direction through consultation must be crucial.

Exactly. It is vital to find a clinic that can recommend the right combination of devices and procedures tailored to your specific face. Of course, if the time or cost doesn’t align, you may choose an alternative. However, there is a significant difference between making a choice with full understanding and proceeding without it.

If you have a clear plan, you can maintain your direction; otherwise, you’ll find yourself questioning what to do every time you visit a dermatologist. The ideal approach is to set a long-term plan from the start and observe the gradual transformation. If the results don’t meet your expectations, you can always consult with your doctor again to discuss which areas need further refinement.

Is there anything patients should do to prevent nodules, beyond the practitioner’s efforts?

There aren’t many special requirements. However, performing a gentle massage for about five days after the procedure can be helpful. You should also avoid alcohol for at least a week, as it can worsen inflammatory reactions. Most importantly, if you feel any firm lumps in your face after about a month, you must visit the clinic immediately. Early treatment is crucial because nodules tend to become more densely packed over time.

Is it okay to receive treatments like Juvelook at “factory-style” clinics rather than from a board-certified dermatologist?

There is no single right answer. It wouldn’t be fair to simply label factory-style clinics as ‘bad.’ If a patient’s specific needs align with what those clinics offer, then choosing that path is perfectly valid.

However, Juvelook is not a formulaic procedure like Botox. It may appear simple, but it is actually quite complex. Since it requires significant technical skill and know-how, I believe it’s better to receive the treatment in a more experienced environment. To put it simply: while factory-style clinics tend to ‘fit the face to the procedure,’ a 1:1 consultation-based clinic like VOS Dermatology ‘fits the procedure to the face.

However, Juvelook is not a formulaic procedure like Botox.

What would you like to say to those who are hesitating to get Juvelook because of the fear of nodules?

The number of nodule cases has increased simply because the total number of procedures has grown; the actual percentage of side effects is not high. Therefore, I hope you won’t be too intimidated by the risks.

If you’re still concerned, I want to emphasize once more the importance of choosing a clinic that can resolve issues if they arise. Beyond just performing the treatment well, it is crucial to ask: ‘Can they effectively solve a problem if one occurs?’ I sincerely hope you find an experienced dermatology clinic that can provide a clear answer to that question.
